How long did it take you to lose the weight?
2 years, still losing gradually. Goal weight is about 60kg.
I had extreme fatigue, and painful headaches (spring 2014). I thought it was related to nursing a newborn, returning to work, etc. I went to the ER, and my BP was 220/115. They prescribed a geriatric dose of a hypertension medicine. I felt so ashamed when the pharmacist confirmed my picture on my health card to ensure she was dispensing the correct medicine to the correct patient. The doctor said I could continue taking these medicines for the rest of my life, or make some lifestyle changes: lose some weight, and exercise. He said I didn’t need low salt, I needed NO salt.
I cut out restaurants and fast food immediately, stopped using salt, started cooking more at home, and made better food choices. I put away the deep fryer! (It’s STILL packed up). Now I eat out once a month or so, instead of a few times a week. Fried food is an occasional treat, rather than a daily staple. I started walking, and then added in more exercises as my health improved.
The decision to change wasn’t when I realized that continuing on my path would lead to a stroke, or even death. I didn’t want that, and had to make an immediate u-turn.
What advice would you give someone who want to lose weight but don’t know where to start?
Look down the road. What are your long term goals? What can you NOT do now with the excess weight? How is the weight affecting not just you, but your children, spouse, and other family members? Financially, plus size clothes are more expensive than regular size clothes, and you are burning up a lot of money by eating so much food. Think what you could accomplish by eating less: gain health, and gain wealth.
